UTM Builder FAQs
What are UTM parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to the end of a URL that tell analytics platforms like Google Analytics where your traffic came from. They consist of up to five parameters: source, medium, campaign, term, and content.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
UTM parameters do not affect your search engine rankings. However, you should avoid letting UTM-tagged URLs get indexed by search engines — they can cause duplicate content issues. Use canonical tags or ensure your analytics does not pass UTM URLs to Google Search Console.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Only utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are required for effective tracking. utm_term is recommended for paid search campaigns and utm_content is useful when running multiple ads pointing to the same URL.
Should I use lowercase for UTM values?
Yes — always use lowercase for UTM values. Google Analytics treats "Facebook" and "facebook" as different sources, which can split your data and make reporting confusing. Stick to lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces, and consistent naming conventions.
